Abstract

Objective: To compare resting tissue perfusion and functional capacity between healthy and individuals with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD); to evaluate the association between resting tissue perfusion after ischemic maneuver and functional capacity in the studied sample. Methodology: Exploratory, cross-sectional observational study consisting of two groups, diagnosed with PAD and healthy. Body mass index (BMI) and resting ankle-brachial index (ABI) were evaluated. The Near-Infrared Spectroscopy associated with arterial occlusion maneuver was used to measure tissue perfusion variables: baseline peripheral oxygen saturation (StO2), the value of the StO2 difference between the beginning and end of the maneuver, and the value of lower StO2 during the maneuver. The Incremental Shuttle Walk Test was applied to measure the functional capacity through the distance covered in the test. Results: 40 participants with PAD aged 64.28±10.50 years, 28 men and 12 women, BMI of 27.2±4.6 kg/m², right ABI 0.62±0.17, left ABI 0.61±0 .17, 15 had diabetes mellitus (37.5%); 40 healthy participants aged 64.23±10.38 years, 28 men and 12 women, BMI of 26.9±3.4 kg/m². Comparison between groups for tissue perfusion and functional capacity variables were significantly different; and the analysis of the correlation between tissue perfusion and functional capacity was found to be significant only for the group of healthy individuals. Conclusion: The worst tissue perfusion in individuals with PAD is not associated with functional capacity, therefore, it is possible to infer that other adaptive peripheral parameters are associated with functional capacity in these individuals.
