Introduction: Poor oral health and sarcopenia are very prevalent among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to verify the association between oral health and risk of sarcopenia in patients on hemodialysis (HD). Methods: The sample was formed by 147 patients with CKD undergoing HD in October 2020 at a single dialysis center. Oral health assessed by oral examining. Oral hygiene habits were checked by the application of a questionnaire. The risk of sarcopenia was classified by the SARC-F questionnaire. Comparisons made between patients with and without risk of sarcopenia. Multivariate logistic regression was carried out to independent predictors of sarcopenia risk. Results: Sixty (42.2%) patients were classified as at risk for sarcopenia. Among patients with and without risk of sarcopenia, there was a higher risk of sarcopenia among patients with more missing teeth, use of dentures, changes in the oral mucosa and fewer toothbrushes. In the multivariate analysis, only the highest degree of comorbidities was an independent predictor of sarcopenia risk. Conclusions: We found a high prevalence of low oral health and risk of sarcopenia. There was no association between oral health and risk of sarcopenia, but higher grade of comorbidities predicted higher risk of sarcopenia.
