Abstract

Objective: To review in the literature the influence of psychosocial factors in the etiology, progression and treatment of Temporomandibular disorders, before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Metodology: The research was carried out through an integrative literature review in the Medline, Scielo, Lilacs databases and the Pubmed research site, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, between June 2016 to August 2021. Review: The research shows a positive correlation between the influence of symptoms of anxiety and depression in the progression of temporomandibular disorders, especially when considered the pandemic period and individuals who had to deal with the direct exposure to the virus daily. Conclusion: According to the literature, psychosocial factors can be considered agents in the etiology of the development, progression and treatment of TMDs, however, there are modulating factors within the reality of each individual that can significantly alter the perception of this disorder, especially when considering the period of COVID-19 pandemic, in which the oversight of mental health worsened the cases of TMD and consequently the quality of life of these patients. Therefore, more clinical studies are needed on the effects of psychological factors with an specific group of people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
