Abstract

The preceptorship models in the family medicine residency influence the quality of care, the preceptor's work routine and the residents' learning. This article aimed to identify existing models and categorize them, as well as analyze their weaknesses and strengths. For this, an integrative review of the literature was carried out in electronic databases, expanded by searching all issues of the Brazilian Journals of Family and Community Medicine and Medical Education. Fourteen articles were included in the review, which resulted in three general preceptorship models, with at least seven different configurations. It was found that the way the preceptor was linked to the teams and health units was the most determining factor in the configuration of the models. The studies included in this review were mostly from the Southeast region of the country. It was also observed that the preceptorship models where the resident forms a team and the preceptor is linked to more than one team, was a strategy used to provide doctors for Primary Health Care and expansion of residency programs. The teaching training of preceptors proved to be central in the training of the resident physician, regardless of the preceptorship model adopted.
