EVIDENCES OF THE NUTRITION TRANSITION IN SCHOOLCHILDREN BETWEEN 7 AND 10 YEARS OF AGE IN THE CITY OF CAMARAGIBE - PE

Abstract

Objective: The study assessed the prevalence of risk, malnutrition and overweight in schoolchildren. Material and Methods: Weight, height and age were obtained from 158 children. Nutritional status was defined according to the World Health Organization (Z-score): -1< Z-score e” -2 defined atrisk; Z-score e” +2 defined overweight or higher height-forage. Percentile Body Mass Index (BMI) was also used: BMI d” 5p defined malnutrition; 5p e” BMI < 85p defined eutrophy; 85p e” BMI < 95p defined at risk-of-overweight; BMI e” 95p defined overweight. Results: 3.2% of the children had low weight and 2.3% had low height. The overweight prevalence according to the BMI (risk and overweight) was 14.8% for boys and 14.7% for girls. Conclusion: The high overweight prevalence and low malnutrition match the current process of nutritional transition.
