EVIDENCE OF A CENTRAL ACTIVITY EXERTED BY TOTAL ALKALOID FRACTION OF CHONDRODENDRON PLATYPHYLLUM IN MICE
Abstract
Chondrodendron platyphyllum is a South American species, used in folk medicine to treat fever caused by malaria and as anti-spasmodic. Objective: To evaluate the activity of Chondrodendron platyphyllum on CNS. Methodology: We performed general tests to assess the effect of the FTA on the CNS. The FTA in doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg / kg was administered to mice by intraperitoneal route and was carried out a pharmacological screening trial, which evaluated the behavioral change of the animals. The test of the potentiation of barbiturate sleeping time, the sodium pentobarbital (PTB) 40 mg / kg, ip, was administered thirty minutes after the FTA solution of 200 mg / kg and the parameters observed in this trial were: latency and sleep time . We also evaluated the motor coordination of animals treated with FTA 200 mg / kg in the rota-rod test, the animals were considered fit to remain in the revolving bar for 180s. Results: The results obtained by pharmacological screening showed that this fraction has an activity in the central nervous system and possibly that this activity is depressing. The treatment did not interfere with the FTA in latency nor in time of sleep induced by PTB. The FTA has no effect miorelaxante and does not interfere with motor coordination of animals subjected to rota-rod. Conclusion: Chondrodendron platyphyllum exerts a depressant effect on CNSDownloads
