BIOSAFETY: KNOWLEDGE AND COMPLIANCE MEASURES TO STANDARD PRECAUTONS IN A HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: This study investigated the knowledge of nursing staff regarding biological hazards they are exposed in the sector of infectious diseases at the Alcides Carneiro University Hospital (ACUH / UFCG) in Campina Grande -PB. Methods: The survey was conducted during April and May 2009, with the application of a questionnaire containing objective questions on the proposed topic, following ethical standards. Results: According to data analysis it was verified that 78.6% had contact with blood, and 64.3% with intact skin, 92.9% wash the injured area with soap and water, and 64.3% did not report the accident. It was found that in the sector there is no post-exposure protocol as well as no biosafety manual, even though the whole team has emphasized a need for their implementation. Conclusion: It is concluded that professionals do not know what sort of precautions should be adopted in relation to certain infectious diseases. DESCRIPTORS: Biosafety. Nursing.
