Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between agrarian space and agricultural employment in the sugar cane zone of Paraiba. The article examines the historical development of this relationship in the region.
Based on the data of agricultural censuses, examines the dynamics of employment between 1985 and 1995. The text also examines the composition of the employment and its spatial distribution in accordance with the size of the establishments. Based on primary informations, focuses on the current conditions of life and work of employees in the sugar cane cultivation. The paper also objectives understand the complementarity between peasantry and employment, and the role of the union movement forward to the challenges imposed by the organization of work in the sugar cane system. Finally, discusses the prospects of the employees and their unions with regard to the recent resumption of sugar and ethanol industry, caused by the increase in the price of sugar and the ethanol program.
