Abstract

This paper aims to highlight the relevance of the urban-regional dimension in the analysis of the labor market. Specifically, the purpose is to analyze the weak urban system which is evident in the Brazilian Northeast metropolis and the connection with the occupational precariousness in their labor markets. Special attention is given to the service occupations and the contrast between the three main Northeast metropolitan areas (Salvador, Fortaleza and Recife) and the other areas of their states. The data was collected from the Demographic Census (1980, 1991 and 2000) and the PNADs (1982, 1995 and 2005).
