Who are they and where go Migrant in Brazil? The Profile of the Brazilian Internal Migrant

Abstract

By using Demographic Census micro data for the years of 1980, 1991 and 2000, the work obtains evidence about Brazilian migrant characteristics for each regions of destine. The results, that derive from the estimation of a logit multinomial model that considers both the decision of migration and chose of regions of destine, point out that i) for any region of destine, between 1980 and 2000, the Brazilian migrant can be differentiated from non-migrant: is has a higher level of school, is younger than non-migrant, are most of them of masculine sex and comes from states in relatively economic and social bad conditions and ii)while during the period 1980-1991 there were more clear differences among migrants according destine regions, during the period 1991-2000 there was a tendency for these difference to disappear. The article congregates three sections. The first section carries through an analysis of the magnitude and regional standards of migration in Brazil during the period of 1980 to 2000. The second section corresponds to the study of the destination of the Brazilian migrants by means of multivariate analysis. The final section is dedicated to the conclusions.
