Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing youth ingress in the labour market of the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre (RMPA), Brazil. It outlines the elements and the main characteristics concerning youth employment, based on updated literature and historical developments. Taking into account the multiple dimensions related to the subject, a logistic regression model was set up in order to estimate the effects of selected demographic and socioeconomic variables on the chance of a youth to be employed in RMPA. One of the findings of the research is that young men are likely to have better chances than women to get a job, and this, in turn, suggests the existence of sexual discrimination. This conclusion leads to the need of the establishment of policies aimed at promoting equal opportunities in the RMPA labour market.
