Abstract

This work srudies the condirional and determinanrs of professional choice of workers disrnissed from Carnaçari Perrochemical Cornplex, in Bahia, berween 1994 and 1996. When rhey have rerurned to rhe work rnarker, the former employees faced rwo rnurually excluding alrernacives: (ry (Q continue as an ernployee regisrercd in a company ar working 011 their own in any kind of acriviry. This srudy has derected a series of variables thar influence rhe former employees to rake the second option, The econornerric analysis revealed thar aging is an important facror when rhose workers have [Q make up their mind about a profession. When he is doing any kind of acrivity 011 his own, rhe former professional from Camaçari Complex works more per week, bur in average earns a higher income in comparison with rhose who have choose to be a regisrered employee.
