Abstract

This paper analyses the behavior of workers fired from the shipping industry of Rio de Janeiro and their respective professional courses between 1989 and 1997, looking for evidences about the depreciation of their hurnan capital. This loss of worker's hurnan capital resulrs from their likelihoods of leaving the formal labor rnarker and ofbeing readmirred with quality degradation of their skills and of the new job. The major results obrained show rhar losses of human capital exist due ro migration failure. The characrerisrics of the workers that do not return to their formal jobs is high qualification, as they come from good jobs. Those workers who are read mirrcdacquire new jobs of lower qualiry and undergo a relative decrease in their own qualification.
