Abstract

The influence of trade unions in human resource management practices of Italian and Brazilian subsidiaries of three multinational corporations (MNCs) at the shop floor level is explored. Adopting a comparative institutionalist theoretical framework, Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) is used as a research model. This modelis broadened through the inclusion of employees’ protagonism. The analysis focuses on: path dependency, structural features and agency capabilities of trade unions in the two compared contexts. Finally, how theseinstitutional characteristics influence recruitment, training and compensation policies is assessed from abottom-up perspective.
