AN ANALYSIS OF THE EVOLUTION AND DETERMINANTS OF POVERTY IN ALAGOAS: 1981-2000

Abstract

The article hasthe objective to analyze the main poverty determinants in the State of Alagoas in the period of 1981-2005. So, initially it is described the secular poverty evolution. Then the relation between the poverty and its main socio economic determinants in the state levei is examined by using data. The data shows that between1981 and 2005 Alagoas passed of from the seventh to the first position in thepoverty ranking in the northeast region, if in one hand, in the period noticed improvementin some social pointers like an illiteracy tax reduction, schooling leveievolution and job levei increase and a small improvement in the poor ration. On theother hand it was observed the per capita income fali and the maintenance of a highsocial inequality. The positive impact observed by the improvement of the socialpointers on the poverty could have been annulled in the recent years for the falI ofthe per capita income. Therefore, a strategy for the poverty reduction also requiresthe growth ofthe per capita income an ibution ofthe income, thatis, a combination of politics that stimulate the economic growth and decrease thesocial inequality.
