Abstract

This articIe investigates the determinants of the success of the company in the informal sector, focusing the differences between the categories by self-employed and employer, as well as the regional disparities ofthat segment. The work incIude a descriptive analysis, for 1997 and 2003 years, and an econometric approach ofthose individuais, take only for the last year, utilizing the database Urban InformalEconomy (ECINF), carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography andStatistics (IBGE). The main results indicate a relative disadvantage for the individuaiswho live in Northeast in relation to others Brazilian regions. This indicates,therefore, the need ofmechanisms that smooth the situation. The discrimination inlabor market was shown up by the analysis ofthe personal attributes. It was shownthat men and white people earn bigger income in relation to women and non whitepeople. It was also verified that individuais that work in trade or service sector andreceived financial aid tend to receive better earnearnings, what favors the success of the firm.
