Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze emerging themes that arises from a survey performed in order to identify and understand the meaning of work and to propose a model to understand it. When the interviewees were encouraged to reflect about the meaning of work, all them spontaneously mentioned pain, indignation and revolt related to work, to the condition of their effectiveness or to the market in general, even those who liked their activities and were fulfilled. The strong statements leads to this article. The concept of work, a new type of work and of worker, subjectivity and pain, instability and pleasure in work were approached in the theoretical revision. The survey was performed by using the qualitative approach, applying as a means of investigation an adaptation of the life's history method, considering educationallevel and different labour relations as intervening variables. Data was examined by using the method of content analysis by categories, taking into consideration the explicit and implicit aspects af the speech of a 24 individuals sample with diversified characteristics. This material has indicated that pain, injustice and disappointment do not depend on the individual's levei of education and kind of job occupation, and may achieve such leveIs that make this individual unfeasible for the work itself and for life amid society.
