INSERTION AND INCOMES OF THE DOMESTIC WORK IN THE METROPOLlTAN AREA OF SALVADOR

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explain the insertion of domestic servants in the labor market, as well as factors that determine the incomes of these workers in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (MRS). For that, it has used a sample of 11.285 persons in the database of the Research of Job and Unemployment, in the period between January of 2002 and December of 2003. Since the domestic labor is responsible for 10.4% of the jobs in MRS (a more elevated percentage than that of industry, 8.3%), the inforrnation of this publications are of very importance. The methodological procedure applies a binomial probit model; to ca1culate equations of participation of domes tic servants in the labor market of MRS. Based of the results achieved, it has been made the correction of possible bias of selection (Heckman, 1979). After that, it has been estimated the deterrninants of the incomes of these people. Economics attributes, as well as some non economic characteristic are considered important aspects for better incomes in the segment of labor market, although the average of the results obtained is very low.
