MORTALlTY AND SOCIOECONOMIC CONDITIONS IN ALAGOAS

Abstract

The objective of the present work is to make a mortality analysis and the socioeconomic conditions in Alagoas in the period of1981-2004. Initially, the main health politics which were implemented in this period in Brazil and in Alagoas are described. Then the secular evolution of mortality pointers and its relation with some socio economic pointers is analyzed. The data shows a decreasing trend of mortality in the period of 1981-2004, although the deaths due to the homicides have shown an increasing trend and the tax mortality in infancy still in a high platform. Among the causes that had contributed so that it didn't have a significant reduction of the mortality tax in the infancy, it is distinguished the low growth of the income, social inequalities and the raised of the poverty levei that excIuded a great part ofthe population to the access to the education, sanitation and goods and health services, causing raised mortality taxes. Therefore, when considering that the State presents one of the worst socio economic situations of the country, it is cIear the necessity of more efficient public politics as for the improvement of the poverty levels, health and education that have great relation with the job access and consequences income increase.
