Coding occupations in the past is an important dimension of the labour history studies, especially when we have to use the inforrnation of pre-censual sources. The aim of this artic1e is to show a Brazilian version of RISCO, which intends to adapt, for historical periods, the Intemational Standard Classification of Occupation (ISCO). This is the c1assification upon which was built the Classificação Brasileira de Ocupações (CBO), used by IBGE and other statistical agencies. RISCO is an intemational project aggregating historians and social scientist from many countries (Belgium, United Kinfdom, Canada, France, Gerrnan, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Denmark, India, Russia, Philippines and Greece); in this sense, the Brazilian contribution it is a very important way to promote comparative studies, in time and space.
