Abstract

Based on the distinction between poor and non-poor using 23 locally specific poverty lines, derived from budget surveys, this text presents an overview of the evolution of the labor market in Brazil in the nineties. It provides an analysis ofchanges in the form of engagement in the labor market by poor and non-poor, butalso considers the changes in composition of farnily income between these two groups. There are evidences of the deterioration of labor market conditions and of increased participation of social assistance and social security benefits in farnily income. These non-labor income proceeds prevented a worsening of poverty incidence in Brazil despite low growth and labor market adjustments after 1996.
