Abstract

Work as a figuration of modernity is generally associated with Employment, also known as salaried work in the industries. However, Work stands for a wide field of practices and activities, transcending the binary opposition between the realms of Work and of Non Work. Evading from the apocalyptic visions, which restate the supposed crisis in the working society, or the "end of Work's centrality", it is mandatory to adrnit that; the metamorphoses which took place in the organisation of the productive processes and in the working relationships, in the turn ofthe 20th century, have been challenging social scientists in contemporary societies. One of those challenges would be rethinking notions, analysis categories and values which guide its studies. Among those, I highlight the modern notion of Work, which informs the analysis of the different working practices in those societies, and attributes, beforehand, places and meanings to the work, reducing it to Employment. For this reason, some authors involved in this debate inquire: to what extent is it a crisis of Work in general? Or a crisis of Work in its historical form, assumed by the end of the 18th century, in England and related to textile employment? I intend to approach those subjects, having as reference the production of an annual Carnival parade by the major Samba Schools from São Paulo (Brazil).
