Abstract

This article aims to take up again the controversy on the effects of trade liberalization in the Brazilian labour market, analyzing the wage differentials between skilled and unskilled workers in the manufacture industry in 1995 and 1999 for the Metropolitan Areas of São Paulo and Recife. Using an adaptation of Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition (OB) methodology, an evidence was found that wage differentials had increased for skilled workers in the first Metropolitan Area, whilst it had reduced in the second one. These results does not corroborate the premises of the Heckscher-Ohlin and Stolper-Samuelson (HOS) models and their variants, considering that Brazil is a labour-intensive developing country.
