Abstract

The article analyzes the performance of the labor market in the Metropolitan Region of Recife in the midst of accelerating economic growth in the state of Pernambuco in the years 2003-2011, investigating the quantity and quality of jobs created. We find that unemployment fell sharply and wages rose, both in the service sector as well as in the industry. Formalization has expanded and there is evidence that unemployed workers are taking less time to find jobs. Average years of education increased, which should have positive effects on productivity in the long run. This environment represents a turnaround in comparison to the 90´s, when low economic growth had adverse effects on labor market. However, sustainability of this favorable trend in the coming years requires effective policies to prepare the workforce for the new opportunities.
