Abstract

This paper analyzes the dynamics of employment in the so-called Zona Sul (Southern Region) of Rio Grande do Sul, particularly in the cities of Pelotas and Rio Grande. Besides discussing the theoretical aspects related to the question of employment as a social issue, the study seeks to identify the impacts of economic growth on the creation of formal jobs. It appears that a high concentration of regional economic growth in the municipality of Rio Grande is accompanied by a limited growth in employment rates. It is suggested, therefore, that we are facing a regional development pattern that has limited impact on the creation of formal jobs, aiming in particular, on the high vulnerability in the work bequeathed by the Brazilian model of capitalist development over the last few decades.
