Abstract

The article attempts to base discussions about transformation of Ceará’s rural areas, with  focus on changes into profile of workers, seeking to understand the scenario in which the rural labor market is inserted. It elaborates a framework relating to the new activities in rural areas, the development of non-agricultural occupations in this environment, followed by a summary of the main components of the profile of the worker. The data are from PNAD / IBGE, for the years 2004 and 2008. The research shows evidence of an intermingling of urban and rural areas, bringing changes in rural-urban relations. These are reflected on the working relationship, giving workers new ways to raise rural income. Concerning the characteristics of workers, there is high number of workers concentrated in lower pay bands, and mostly of low education with advanced age. it was found also that agriculture continues to have a strong presence of youth workforce.
