Abstract

This articleanalyzes the socio-economic, political and ideological bases of UGT (GeneralWorkers’ Union), confederation that emerged during the debates about the legalrecognition of trade unions confederations in Lula's second term. This is an analysisof data obtained through a survey conducted with 347 delegates present at thefirst National Plenary of the UGT, which occurred in August 2009 in the city ofPraia Grande (SP). These data are part of a broader research on the socialbases of trade unions confederations in contemporary Brazil. Our findings showthat the UGT represents, mostly, private sector workers located in the serviceand trade economic sectors, who work predominantly in white collar middle andlower hierarchy activities. Most delegates were attached to the statecorporatism, didn’t have a clear political party linkage and had a longexperience in the unions they represented.
