Abstract

The objective of the article was to analyze the evolution of productive specialization (establishments and jobs) in the city of Novo Hamburgo (RS) and Nova Serrana (MG) in the shoe manufacturing industry, in the period 1995-2010. The methodology used was the Location Quotient (LQ) employed as a relative indicator of specialization. The data base was RAIS/MTE. The results revealed that, compared to the number of establishments, the footwear industry is constituted as relative specialization site in both cities. Regarding the number of workers in the shoe manufacturing industry, it can be verified that all territorial units were relatively specialized in this sector. Regarding the LQ of jobs in the shoe industry, by class, it was identified that Novo Hamburgo was relatively specialized in the manufacture of leather footwear. In Nova Serrana the LQ revealed relative specialization in manufacturing tennis shoes of any material and shoes of other materials.
