Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamics of informality in the Brazilian labor market between 1993 and 2013. Data for the research were derived from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD). The analysis showed that during the 1990s, in a context of low economic dynamism, the level of informality has remained virtually unchanged, although at very high levels. On the other hand, this decade was characterized by a worsening of labor relations: high unemployment, lower pay levels etc. In the 2000s, in a context of economic recovery, the informal levels showed significant reduction. Given these considerations, it is possible to note that informality in the labor market has a cyclical and structural component, since it accompanies the trends in the macroeconomic scenario.
