Abstract

Social changes envisioned around the world resulted in important changes in the role of women in society. The struggle for rights leveraged by the feminist movement has repercussions on his enthronement in political life and in the labor market. From this context, this paper aims to analyze and compare the female and male participation in the labor market in the Brazilian industry, according to socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. The time frame covers the years 2001 and 2010. Initially we make a review of the literature and then uses the database of the Annual Social Information – RAIS, the Ministry of Labor and Employment – MTE. The results show significant growth in female participation in the formal market of Brazilian labor, since their relative share was higher than men in all economic sectors analyzed. But despite more educated, turnover in manufacturing employment is higher for women, and they are concentrated in the lower pay bands.
