GENDER WAGE GAP IN THE BRAZILIAN LABOR MARKET: A REGIONAL COMPARISON

Abstract

Although female participation rates in the labor market have shown a sustained increase in the last decades, gender pay gap still remains between men and women. Using data from the last Brazilian National Sample Household (PNAD 2014), this paper analyzes, through the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition methodology, the factors that contribute to the existence of the wage gap. The research verifies also whether (or not) the income gap is uniform across Brazilian regions. The results show that there is an unequal response for the same characteristics depending on the sex of the person. The results differ also among regions of the country, as data prove that the discrepancy to the return for observable characteristics between men and women is higher in North and Northeast than in other regions of the country.
