Abstract

his essay addresses some of the deep transformations financialized capitalism has been provoking in our lives by completely altering the functionality of social policy and the nature of welfare regimes, both responsible for the materialization of redistributive policies and for confronting the numerous forms of inequalities that characterize all contemporary societies.  More precisely, it discusses the mass indebtedness of households, who incorporate the remuneration of interest-bearing capital into their reproduction costs, which makes them not only structurally dependent on access to financial markets, but way more vulnerable in the short, medium and long term as well. Once exploited, today the working class is also financially expropriated through debt. The Brazilian experience serves as a case study.
