Abstract

This article aims to analyze the main transformations that occurred in the internal space of supermarkets from the second half of the 1990s, by highlighting the impact of commercial restructuring for the operational workers of the large supermarket chains that operate in the city of São Paulo. Specifically, based on secondary data and interviews, we related the introduction of bar codes and changes in the layout of supermarkets with changes in the organization of work. Among the consequences of these transformations, the emergence of a new arrangement of work on the shop floor stands out. Based on the flexibility paradigm, this arrangement has contributed to reducing the number of jobs and redefining the forms of precariousness and intensification of work.
