Abstract

The paper discusses how the dynamics of production for capital and the reality of production and reproduction of the migrant workforce structure the extremely precarious working conditions to which this population is subjected and, at the same time, constitute barriers to overcoming them. The analysis is based on the results of post-doctoral research carried out between 2021 and early 2023. Based mainly on the experience of Bolivian women sewing workers in São Paulo, the article highlights the oppressions of race and gender as constitutive of the dynamics of this industry based on the systematic and profound cost reduction of immigrant workforce social reproduction. This corroborates the thesis that contemporary slave labour, as well as precarious and informal work, is located at the heart of capital accumulation and in line with global trends towards flexibilization and labour precariousness.
