Abstract

It is known that -ístico(a), to many experts, is not considered a suffix, for it is a diachronical combination of the suffixes -ista and -ico(a), whose origin dates back to Greek as a combination of the Greek ending -ιστής and the Greek adjectival suffix -ικός. Even so, to consider -ístico(a), which already figures in Greek, as a combination of both suffixes is very complex and delicate, for not always can one conceive of an intermediate form derived only from -ista, that is, there are, for example, the words sofista and sofístico, but only the word característico without the intermediate form *caracterista, formed only with the suffix -ista. Similarly, the case concerning -ística is also complex and controversial, for it comes from -ístico(a),  diachronically.
