Abstract

Researches in Generative Grammar have shown a progressive change process in the Brazilian Portuguese (BP) concerning morphosyntactic aspects related, for example, to subjects, objects and word order, resulting in the emergency of a new grammar (cf. ROBERTS; KATO, 1996; KATO; NEGRÃO, 2000; GALVES, 2001). It is supported that this process could be explained by the reduction of the inflectional paradigm of verbs and reorganization of pronoun paradigm in this language. Thus, this paper intends to investigate if contemporaries grammars based on uses of BP are incorporating, in their analyses, the contributions of generative studies so as to enlarge the description and explanation of theses uses. Therefore, we selected two grammars in this research: Brazilian Portuguese Grammar, by Mario A. Perini and New Brazilian Portuguese Grammar, by Ataliba T. de Castilho. On the whole, results indicate that these grammars not only show a more suitable description of our linguistic reality, but are also based on scientific studies of language, particularly those based on the generative grammar, what represents, to a certain extent, a radical change in the history of the Brazilian grammatical compendiums.
