Abstract

ABSTRACT. This study aims to recover the meanings of text that were present at the beginning of the project of semiotics as a science of meaning. For this, we chose the book Sémantique Structurale (1966), by Algirdas J. Greimas, considered the beginning of the semiotics of the Paris School. We will discuss the meanings that support the notion of text in the foundation of semiotics, and also other concepts, such as corpus and discourse. The study is part of the discussion about the object of semiotics, and it explains how the text could move from an object of linguistic substance to a general object of semiotics in the following years after the publication of Sémantique Structurale, resulting in changes in the epistemology, in the theory and in the methodology of semiotics as a science.

Author Biographies

Letícia MORAES LIMA, Universidade de São Paulo - USP

PhD student in Semiotics and General Linguistics, University of São Paulo (USP), with the research "The notion of text in semiotics", directed by Dr. Ivan Carlos Lopes (USP), with the co-orientation of Dr. Sémir Badir (FRS-FNRS) , University of Liège). PhD Internship at the Université de Liège, between November 2018 and October 2019. Her doctoral research discusses text and textuality in semiotic, cultural and digital objects. She is a member of the "Semiotic Studies Group" (GES-USP) and the "Semiotics: Theoretical and Descriptive Models" (USP) group, registered with the CNPq Research Groups Directory. She has worked as a professor at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) and at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS), Faculties Integrated Paranaíba (FIPAR). She is mainly interested in the following subjects: semiotics, textuality, Big Data and society.

Ivã Carlos LOPES, Universidade de São Paulo - USP

He graduated in Letters from the University of São Paulo and later earned a master's degree in Arts and a doctorate in Semiotics and General Linguistics from the same institution, with a sandwich internship at the University of Paris X - Nanterre (Michel Arrivé, co-advisor). In the 2008-2009 school year, he did a postdoctoral internship in semiotics at the University of Limoges, France (Jacques Fontanille, supervisor). During the first semester of 2013, he worked as a postdoctoral student at the University of Liège, Belgium (Sémir Badir, supervisor). Assistant Professor Doctor at FFLCH-USP, teaches in Graduation in Letters and Postgraduate in Semiotics and General Linguistics. His research and publications focus mainly on semiotics and related domains. He is part of the editorial board of different journals, including Letras & Letras (UFU), CASA - Notebooks of Applied Semiotics (UNESP), Nouveaux Actes Semiotiques (Université de Limoges), Signata (Université de Liège). Editor in charge of the Semiotic Studies (USP) magazine, alongside Professor José Américo Bezerra Saraiva. He is part of the international team of scientific advisers of the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FRS / FNRS, BE) and the "Sigilla" - Presses Universitaires de Liège collection. He has often translated collaborative books and articles from different authors, including which Michel Arrivé, Denis Bertrand, Francis Édeline, Jacques Fontanille, Herman Parret, Claude Zilberberg. He works in the area of ​​semiotics and surroundings, especially interested in the epistemology of the language sciences, poetics and general linguistics.
