In the aesthetic theory of the German-Baltic philosopher Nicolai Hartmann (1882-1950), the focus on the creative act is criticized for dwelling on the least comprehensible aspect of the field of aesthetics. Instead, Hartmann proposes dedicating himself to tasks such as the analysis of the structure of the work of art. Flow psychology, in turn, emerged from the questions of the Hungarian-American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1934-2021) about visual artists, such as painters, designers and sculptors. The theory of the flow state investigates, among other processes, the creative act in the arts and sciences, pointing to possible applications in other areas of life, such as family life. Our working hypothesis is that flow psychology, in addition to enabling a refutation of aesthetic conceptions contrary to theorizing about the creative act, can also broaden the scope of philosophy, with regard to themes such as the values and background of the work of art.
