Abstract

The automation brings to the library more flexibility in processing the collection, quick retrieval of information by users and enthusiastic service. The study aimed to automate and organize the collection of the Community Library Socorro Chaves in Petropolis in order to provide to the users a quick and secure access as well as a greater control over the collection by the coordination of the Library. The research is qualitative and, for its development, we carried out a bibliographical survey with a focus on Community Libraries. A software to automate libraries (Biblioteca Fácil) was implemented, we began later the process of selection, cataloging and inclusion of titles in the automated base. Thus, we obtained 40% of collection cataloged and 7% automated, which was achieved with the help from some people of the community who were willing to learn and participate in this experiment. This has brought benefits to the community of Petrópolis and surroundings, who used the library for their research and leisure and cultural activities. Experiences like these are of paramount importance for graduating students, as well as community development because the exchange of knowledge among the involved people provides transformation of the individuals.
