Abstract

This paper seeks to elucidate different uses of the word rhythm in its relationship with dance. How is rhythm understood in the field of dance? In what ways to think about the use of rhythm concepts in dance practices? For this, it is based on considerations from the literature, in addition to the authors' experiences as artists and teachers in undergraduate and graduate studies. Rhythm is approached in everyday life and in more specific approaches: musical rhythm in dance, rhythm of body movement and rhythm of choreographic composition. In the first, direct, indirect and independent relationships are established with music. In the second, an approach is presented with the categories of Space and Effort of the Laban/Bartenieff System. Finally, the rhythms are thought of in the composition of a choreography and expands to the composition of an entire spectacle.
