THE USE OF SWISS BALL FOR THE PROMOTION OF HUMANIZED CHILDBIRTH
Abstract
Objective: To verify the available scientific evidence in the literature on the application of Swiss ball during delivery for the promotion of humanized childbirth, as one of the non-pharmacological techniques for pain relief during the delivery process. Material and Methods: This was a bibliographic review based on the databases Medline, Lilacs and SciELO. A total of 194 studies were found, of which 10 papers published in the last eight years were included for the analysis. The following topics were covered: humanized delivery, the use of Swiss ball by the multidisciplinary team and the results and benefits for the mother arising from the use of Swiss ball during delivery. Results: The Swiss ball is an important non-pharmacological resource to provide comfort, movement, fetal presentation, pain relief, reduction of anxiety and relaxation of the parturient. Significant results about a decrease in the duration of delivery have not been found. Conclusion: It is concluded that the Swiss ball contributes significantly to the promotion of humanized childbirth, but professionals involved in health care delivery need more awareness and preparation for dealing with the humanized care to women during delivery.
