Abstract

Objective:This literature review discussesthe treatment modalities for each type of carious lesion after their correct diagnosis. Materials and Methods: We performed a search of relevant studies published in PUBMED, LILACS, SciELO, and MEDLINE,up toJune 2014. Results:Occlusal pits and fissures are high-risk areas for the development of carious lesions due to theirvery retentive surface, which favors biofilm buildup. These lesionscan also affect interproximal and smooth surfaces of the tooth, the first located in the cervical regionbelow the contact point, and the second surroundingthe buccal and lingual/palatal surfaces.Fluoride, such as fluoride varnishes and gels, have been used effectively and safelyin theprevention and control ofincipient caries lesions. Thus, fluoride therapyconstitutesan important approach tothe prevention of tooth decay. Conclusion: the dental professional should adopt a correct therapeutic approach to intervene with minimal tooth wear and maximum effectiveness in the control of the disease. In case one is unsureof the most appropriate conduct to be followed in a given situation, it is advised to employ health promotion measures, follow-up and then reassess the case.Tooth wear should beperformed only when extremely needed.
