FEELINGS OF PEOPLE UNDERGOING HEMODIALYSIS IN THE WAIT FOR KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION

Introduction: Chronic renal failure leads to changes in the lifestyle by causing physical, psychological, social and sexual limitations. Affected individuals may have negative feelings about the disease, while also acknowledging that the treatment makes it possible to wait for kidney transplantation and can increase their quality of life and life expectancy. Objective: To describe the feelings of people undergoing hemodialysis who are waiting for a kidney transplantation. Material and methods: This was a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach performed at the Nephrology and Renal Transplantation Service of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Sobral. The data were collected in July 2015 with a sample of 12 patients with chronic renal insufficiency undergoing hemodialysis treatment at the Department of Nephrology of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Sobral. The data were collected through an individual interview and interpreted by the content analysis. Results: After data collection, the information was categorized into the following: characterization of the participants; expectations of hemodialysis patients waiting for kidney transplantation; fears related to the disease and to the kidney transplantation; and contribution of nursing to the extension of life expectancy. Conclusion: Patients undergoing hemodialysis and waiting for a kidney transplantation are surrounded by positive feelings and expectations of successful transplantation as well as fears related to treatment and death.
