Abstract

Objective: To verify the efficiency of state public spending, of the states that make up the Legal Amazon, in the fight against deforestation in the protected areas within its competence between the years 2013 and 2018.

Background: Sustainability accounting needs to explore its effects over time, in addition to interacting with other disciplines such as public accounting.

Method: A descriptive analysis of the data and the creation of a Bayesian efficiency frontier was performed. For this, the data used were the evolution of deforestation in state conservation units in the Legal Amazon, in addition to the main accounts of the environmental management group and socioeconomic variables.

Result: The results found showed that the states are inefficient for environmental preservation, on the other hand, spending on environmental control proved to be significant in its relationship with deforestation. The variation in the number of the population does not affect deforestation. Lower defaults by individuals, in line with a higher level of formal employment, contributed to reducing deforestation.

Contributions: This study explored a gap between public accounting and environmental accounting, in order to measure and evaluate the capacity of the public entity to contain deforestation, thus it was demonstrated that economic variables have a greater effect on deforestation than the control carried out by the states.
