Resumo

The aim of this study is to understand the crab-gathering, fisherman perception of the caranguejo-uçá (Ucides cordatus) repoduction. The methodology adopted was direct observation complemented with inquiries and interviews. The gathering activity in mangrove ecosystems is carried out during the low tide. Usually the crabs are picked up inside holes. However, during the reproduction period, the crabs leave the holes in abundance and are easily collected. The gathering in this period is considered to be predatory and is forbidden. The data indicate that the intensification of the gathering activity predation the reproduction period is much more related to survival pressure than irresponsible predation. That is mainly a social than an ecological problem. The focus of conservation needs to change from the resource towards the binomial crab-gatherer-resource.
