SOBRE A NIDIFICAÇÃO DE VENILIORNIS PASSERINUS (LINNAEUS, 1766) (AVES, PICIDAE) NO NORDESTE DO BRASIL
Abstract
On the nesting of Veniliornis passerinus (Linnaeus, 1766) (Aves, Picidae) in northeastern Brazil. Two nests of Veniliornis passerinus found at the Guaribas Biological Reserve Mamanguape, coastal Paraíba (c. 06°50’ 19’’S, 35°07’34’’W; altitude 150m) and a third nest found at the Pico do Jabre State Park, Maturéia, Paraíba (c. 07°15’12’’S, 37º23’07’’W; altitude 1197m) were studied. The nests were made in cavities 4-6m above the ground excavated in the trunks of Cecropia sp. (Cecropiaceae) and unidentified dead trees. The nests measured 190-280mm deep and 60-90mm in diameter, with an entrance 34-40mm high and 35-36.7mm wide. The nest found at Pico do Jabre housed four ovoid white eggs, which measured (n=3) 19.55 x 15.7mm; 19.4 x 15.3mm and 19.4 x 15.8mm.
