in other activities, the footwear industry adopted them in agreement with the modifications in the demand in terms of types of shoes and of size of the requests. Using craft groups of work to the entrance in the external market at the end of 1960s, the sector migrated for a work process with the use of assembly line and automation of productive process to assist demands in high volumes and little variety. With the decrease of the sizes of the orders and of larger diversification of lines and models that are observed starting from the beginning of the decade of 1990, the industry started to adopt groups or work cells. Assembly line and groups coexist in function of the size and variety of the orders of produced shoes.
