Abstract

The present article seeks to outline the epistemic and methodological reflections which guided the investigation of collective action by metal workers of the automobile industry in Paraná, Brazil. The apprehension of the dynamics of these workers action, due to deep changes in the world of labor — caused by politics, economy and technological innovations —,allows the questioning of theories which consider unviable the social and political agglutination of workers, and the questioning of the theoretical approach that sees collective action as guided by purely egotistic ends. It is also noted that the empiric research which bases itself on the dialog between different fields of knowledge and on a thinking pattern which sees reality as historically built, ambiguous, contradictory and multiple, it is fundamental for criticism against certain apocalyptic theories which befell labor and workers in the end of the 20

th century.
