Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the employment dynamics in Brazil from 1982 to 2001, characterized by low economic growth and severe changes in the labor market. The central hypothesis is that the transformations observed in such period contributed to maintain low qualification jobs and to reduce the precarious patterns of remuneration of the main occupations in Brazil. Jobs with higher skills requirements and higher level of remuneration were specially affected, their income differences were reduced compared to those with less skills requirement and lower level of remuneration.
