Abstract

This paper examines firstly the evolution of the labor income level and inequality between 1998 and 2007. Secondly it shows the results of an analysis of income dispersion for occupied people in 2004 and 2007, considering the type of occupation, status of employment, age and sex. It is utilized the variance of the logarithm of people’s income in the main work, in order to express the income differences of occupied people. The reduction in labor income differences with an increase in the average income observed between 2004 and 2007 was a novelty in Brazil. The results emphasize the effects of the increasing formalization of labor contracts, the rise of the minimum wage and the modifications caused by the economic growth in the absorption of labour force according to types of occupation.
